Editorial

The month has been tumultuous on the National level with a change in Prime Minister, and on the International front with a number of European countries showing the effects of the GFC. The world events continue the frenetic pace that seems to have become the norm. Media commentary seems to continue to add an enormous amount of ‘hype’ to everything that happens, and I am drawn to look closer to home to draw some comfort that life continues with meaning and purpose despite all that is occurring.

Here in the hinterland nature has reminded us that winter is about snuggling under the doona, and lighting the open fire at night, and about getting jobs done in the garden that would see us collapse with exhaustion if attempted in summer. There has been a bumper crop of citrus around, and everywhere along the road there are bountiful yellow and orange globes enticing the driver from roadside stalls. It has been a time for jam making, lots of juice, preserving (lemons and limes), and generally enjoying fresh juicy fruit.

Our local activities see us meeting with friends and community for a shared project such as the recent Dunoon Giant Garage Sale or the Permaculture Open Day at Nimbin, or meeting with others to share some food and entertainment like a the recent weekend events at the Rosebank Co-op.

The Lismore Lantern Parade was held and many people report having a great evening of community and entertainment. See some great images of the big night on our calendar page this issue.

In this month’s VJ we have a taste of the atmosphere from the giant garage sale held recently at Dunoon. The pictures show a vibrant and friendly group of people getting together – a great community! The schools have been busy in their gardens and the children have been excelling in sports and poetry. We have Mullumbimby eerie tales and a great album review, and part two of the composting toilet story. We welcome Jean McCall as a ‘new’ contributor who is sharing her trials and tribulations in her garden. Jean has been a long term supporter of the VJ, supplying the Monthly rainfall reports from her area.

The production team is still searching for some one to present the ‘stars’ in the VJ each month so if you fit this profile please contact us!
