UPPER COOPERS CREEK SCHOOL NEWS
In the Garden
This month the students began to undertake activities to improve the school gardens. Enthusiastic students worked to relocate our compost bin, worm farm and began mulching. The compost bin and worm farm relocation will enable student’s improved and safer access which will in turn allow greater recycling. The students enthusiastically moved the mulch, filling wheelbarrows to mulch the passive play area. They are very pleased with their results so far.
We continued the mulching in the pond area garden. Mrs. Cason and I were proud of the students as they worked as a team assisting each other in their work. The students are excited with the look of the garden and are happy with their result so far. Several of the older students with the assistance of Rochelle attacked the front entrance gardens. They weeded, forked and started mulching but time ran out. Other students collected rocks to assist in the cleanup of our school environment. All of the students worked hard and they are to be congratulated. The results are there for all to see.
After the long weekend, the gardening happened on Tuesday afternoon. Mulching the passive play area will continue and the garden which runs parallel to the toilet block were weeded forked and mulch. This is where the students will start planting their herb and vegetable garden. The older boys continued their revamping of the front entrance garden. Along with Janet and Rochelle they mulched and planted our now surprise garden. What is our surprise garden? It will be a surprise as the edible plants grow and are harvested. What plants are in our surprise garden? This is going to be the unknown quantity with us having to wait and see what grows.
While the boys were in the entrance garden the other students were busy mulching the old pond area and the front of the walkway (old bin site), where Mondo Grass and Bromeliads were planted. Many students also potted small Cherry Tomato seedlings. After the holidays these will be planted out in our planned vege patch.
Last week, was our last week before the holidays so students could enjoy the opportunity to participate in some cooking. Janet has donated lemons and we cooked Lemon Butter and made Lemonade. We hope the students will enjoy the benefits of a bountiful harvest eating lemon butter on toast and drinking lemonade.
Cross Country News
On Monday Sue drove Lily and I to the Lismore Race Course for district cross country. When we got there, a lady come up to us and asked Lily and I our names and we told her. After we got seats Lily had her race and came 34th then in another 2 hours I had my race and came 14th. I was pretty happy with the place I came and I had a great day.
Yesterday Daoluka came to my house because mum was taking Daoluka and I to Zone Cross Country. First we walked the course. It took a very long time. My race was the first. It was very tiring and it felt longer than the one in Rosebank. Mum said that it was. I came 34th out of 70 people. I had fun at the Cross Country.
